Cardinals destroy pope ring sealing end of John Paul II era
Vatican officials marked the pope’s death with the destruction of his Fisherman’s Ring and seal, signaling the end of a 26 year reign. The nine day mourning closed with a Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica as cardinals prepare to enter the Sistine Chapel for the conclave. Security remains tight to keep the papal successor’s name secret until the habemus papam announcement.
