World grain prices collapsed with wheat at Chicago dropping near 1.30 a bushel as 5 cent limits and double digit losses spread from Liverpool and Rotterdam to Buenos Aires and Winnipeg. Traders blamed a broad commodity decline and weaker export demand after European slowdowns, signaling a steep, across the globe selloff.
The 8,500 Southern Pacific workers halt plans for a Friday night walkout after noon. The Brotherhood leaders say they submit the case to the federal mediation board under the railway labor act with assurances of fair treatment and ongoing negotiations with Southern Pacific management.
New York UPI reports an order to cut a speech by Senator Wheeler of Montana from the March of Time film was issued after Kansas board reviewers condemned biased partisan dialogue. The Kansas action bans the dialogue only in Kansas while Wheeler says the speech stands on state rights and opposes the Supreme Court plan.

Two men believed to be Alfred Powers and Rudolph Brinker, sought in a Katonah bank robbery, opened fire in the Topeka post office lobby injuring agent W W Baker seriously and wounding a bystander. The suspects fled in a New York license car as agents traded fire.
Governor Kraschel appointed Charles J. Haas a judge of the Eighteenth Iowa district, to serve Linn Cedar and Jones counties. Haas fills the vacancy from Judge Atherton B. Clark's death, after a Linn County Bar vote recommended him unanimously. He was sworn in in Des Moines and will take the bench Monday.
Des Moines report notes Governor Kraschel signed the anti-slot machine bill making it law though legal authorities questioned whether the measure truly changes existing statutes. Legislators and sponsors claimed it bans slot machines including pinball, but experts say it may hinge on future court rulings over seizure on sight.
DES MOINES AP The Iowa House approved a bill already passed by the Senate to appropriate 25000 dollars for the control of insect pests in the state. Sponsors urged swift passage to fund combatting a possible grasshopper infestation next summer.

A mass meeting of 3,700 strikers was planned to vote on returning to work.
London reports secret talks among Britain France and the United States to settle the overdue war debts with a gold bond issue in America. Negotiators seek reduced principal, gold payments, and bonds 20 to 50 years in length with attractive interest to lure U S investors.
Two thousand women packed the Paramount theater for the final session of a four day free cooking school led by Celia Bush, national food authority, sponsored by The Gazette. The audience filled the lower floor and balcony before her 9 a.m. class, with a lobby overflow and a broadcast setup. Bush unveiled a surprise watermelon cake, baked in a roasting pan, described with edible details and frosting.
Berlin reports say Hitler favors a graceful withdrawal from the Spanish civil war. Goering heads to Rome to urge Mussolini to end intervention and Moscow may also compromise if Berlin and Rome agree. Withdrawal would be framed as honoring the non intervention pact with Russia as a condition.
In Harlan county Kentucky a witness claimed a mine superintendent threatened to jail him for testifying about a brutal reign of terror. The scene followed testimonies by two Methodist ministers and a grocery clerk detailing violence culminating in the murder of a prosecuting attorney. R. C. Tackett testified he was paid $30 to stay quiet in the case and later said Ted Creech warned him of a harsher sentence if he spoke.
In Des Moines the Senate voted 28 to 15 to reduce Gov. Hoggatt aide G. W. Kirtley’s salary from 4500 to 3000 dollars a year. Republicans supported the cut while most Democrats opposed. House had earlier added a 3000 dollar limit. debate labeled Kirtley a “wet nurse and stooge” to the governor.
The senate finished work Friday on the state departments portion of the biennial appropriations bill approving a total of 3,486,833 versus the house's 3,374,356. The yearly allocation to state departments was set accordingly.
Pierre S. du Pont and John J. Raskob received subpoenas to testify before the Board of Tax Appeals in New York City on May 3. They must produce 482 records as the treasury pursues charges of fictitious losses from wash sales intended to understate 1929 taxable income.
