Bethel AME Church marks 150 years in Iowa City roots
Dianna Penny recalls her father Rev. Fred Penny guiding Bethel AME Church from 1958 to 1994 as it welcomed students and residents. The congregation rebuilt amid peeling paint and old wiring, hosted meals, and even held outdoor services. Evidence links the church to an Underground Railroad site. it joined the National Register in 2000. Pastor Kimberly Abram-Bryant emphasized inclusivity and support for black UI students, calling the church a “mega church” in spirit and history. The weekend anniversary drew full pews and a reminder that “the best is yet to come.”
