The Rio Grande carved long sand deposits in the San Luis Valley as winds moved sand northeast to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Heavier grains settled at the mountain foot while lighter grains moved through passes. The 360 square mile dune system relies on groundwater and two surrounding streams. President Hoover established the monument in 1932.
