The Senate approved SF 519 by 35-15 to stop home dial-up Internet via the Iowa Communication Network for educators and students. Dormitory access may extend past Jan 1, 1998 only if regents and private colleges seek regulators’ approval. Critics fear off campus inequities and higher university costs.

Senators push new school tax credit despite budget concerns

Iowa Senate approved a 3 million expansion to cover public school fees, a middle class relief move said to be a priority by Sen. Tom Vilsack. Opponents warn the extra cost is not in the 1998 budget and may derail the session. Senate Leader Iverson questioned the bill while McCoy sought reconsideration. The chamber also extended a business tax break for subchapter S firms up to eight million dollars overall.
