Howard and Wife Visit Cedar Rapids Hospitals and Markets

Television star Dr Hudson Howard toured Cedar Rapids hospitals as part of United Hospitals campaign and appeared at several supermarkets. He traveled with his German wife Eva Ralf, former Berlin State Opera prima ballerina, who stopped professional dance after their three children were born. He recently finished a film and hopes for more this summer, famous for Lost Horizon and Disputed Passage.

The Cedar Rapids annexation case moves toward trial with Judge John W. Tobin ruling on 109 interrogatories. The city must answer 52 while 57 are sustained. deadline April 27 for city responses. Trial moved from April 29 to May 27 in Linn district court.

C. R. Man Fined For Drunk Driving

Ralph A. Dutton of Blairs Ferry road NE was fined 300 dollars after pleading guilty to drunk driving. He was arrested after his car hit a road sign at Seventh avenue and Second street in Marion. Installments of 50 dollars per month were approved.

Woman 21 Receives Ten Year Suspended Term

Mrs Wilfred Carol LeVelle, 21, wife of a Cedar Rapids youth, pled guilty to a breaking and entering charge in Linn district court. She was given a suspended ten year reformatory term after the prison sentence for her husband was handed down Saturday. The plea and sentence reflect a shared legal action stemming from the case in Linn County.

Couple and companion sentenced in station break-in case

Judge Floyd Philbrick imposed and then suspended a sentence for Mrs LeVelle and paroled her to the State Board of Parole. Mr LeVelle, his wife and their companion Tommy Fearson were accused of a Feb 18 service station break in. LeVelle and Pearson each drew 10 year terms in the Anamosa reformatory after guilty pleas.

Suthers Appointed to Linn Probation Staff

The Linn county probation staff gained a second deputy with Bruce W. Suthers’s appointment Tuesday after approval by the county board of supervisors at the request of Juvenile Court Judge Donald Barnes. He joins Chief Probation Officer Allen Lowell and Deputy Gertrude Benecke under Judge Barnes, with additional courthouse personnel actions also noted.

Killed in Fertilizer Mixer at Spencer Plant Foods

SPENCER AP One man died and another was hurt in an industrial accident at the Spencer Plant Foods Inc. plant Tuesday. Donald Schmeling 33 Milford father of six was killed while Ernest Olson 42 Spencer suffered minor bruises. A co worker accidentally started the mixer instead of a blower during attempts to aid the men inside the large fertilizer mixer.

A boiler explosion sank the Dutch tug Gunnard in Rotterdam on Tuesday. One person was killed, three are missing, and 12 are injured.
