Iowa’s sole House speaker Henderson a puzzling exit
Des Moines reports Iowa historian Stacy Cordery notes David Bremner Henderson, Iowa’s only U S House speaker, left after a short tenure amid mystery. Born 1840 in Scotland, he immigrated to Illinois then settled in Fayette County. He served in Congress from 1882 and became speaker in 1899 retiring three years later amid tariff disputes and rumored private scandal.
