Budget cuts threaten refugee aid in Iowa to 2018
Iowa refugee support groups face a one third funding reduction under a Health and Human Services budget plan for fiscal 2018. The RefugeeRISE AmeriCorps program would lose 100000 of 300000 in state funds, jeopardizing services across Des Moines Waterloo and Marshalltown as lawmakers weigh the impact. Sen. Joe Bellcom says the program is in demand and should not be cut. Eastern Iowans plan an Art For Peace fundraiser today in Iowa City to aid Sudanese civilians, featuring Lutheran Church of South Sudan and Red Cross speakers and local art.
