Iowa Wins More REA Funds For Rural Electrification
Iowa likely will receive 3 500 000 more REA funds to augment the 12 500 000 previously allotted for rural electrification. Earl Wisdom of Des Moines, executive secretary of the Iowa Rural Electric Cooperative association, said expansion will be wide, with southern and northeastern areas prioritized. Since July, 110 000 farms were added, bringing powered farms to 80 000 and total lines to about 35 000 miles across 52 member cooperatives. The Chariton Valley Electric cooperative of Albia is the newest member, building 150 miles of lines by Sept. 1. Extensions were approved for Clarke, Maquoketa Valley, Cherokee, and Rideta cooperatives, expanding lines and farms served in multiple counties.
