Equity plan targets graduation gains and fewer suspensions
Cedar Rapids schools unveil an equity action plan to raise graduation rates for African American and Latino students and those with disabilities, cut absence and suspension rates, and boost referrals to special education. The plan, led by California consultant Edwin Javius, also adds mentorships, a parent advisory group, and equity walks, while aligning staff diversity with student demographics. A federal discrimination probe into discipline persists, and the board approved an 8 cent property tax increase for 2015-16, potentially easing if state funding shifts.
