Iraq Dismisses 1300 Soldiers Over Basra Desertions
In Baghdad the Iraqi government sacked more than 1,300 soldiers and policemen who deserted during the Basra fighting. The cabinet meanwhile approved draft legislation to bar militias from political parties in upcoming provincial elections, as Prime Minister Maliki pressures Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr to disband the Mahdi Army. The Basra offensive stalled amid strong militia resistance, raising questions about the loyalty and leadership of Iraqs security forces with U S and British support ongoing.

Iranian officials raised the death toll from a blast at a crowded Shiraz mosque to 12 with more than 200 injured. Authorities said the explosion was likely an accident from ammunition left over at a recent military exhibition, not a bombing. The semi official Fars agency noted the blast occurred during a sermon denouncing Wahabi influence and the Bahai faith in a city famed for Persepolis ruins.
