Reno under pressure over independent counsel probe

Pre-emptive mastectomy lowers cancer risk in high risk women

Mayo Clinic researchers followed 950 women who had bilateral prophylactic mastectomies between 1960 and 1993 and found a 91 percent reduction in breast cancer risk. Remnants of breast tissue and undetected cancer may still pose risks. The study, led by Dr. Lynn Hartmann, was presented at an American Association for Cancer Research conference. BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes significantly raise lifetime cancer risks.

Violent Crime Drops Further in 1995 Report

The Justice Department said Americans saw 1995 violent crime fall 12.4 percent from 1994, with suburbs showing declines across most personal victimizations except rape and sexual assault. The National Crime Victimization Survey excludes murder. Among whites ages 12 and up the drop was 12.4 percent, while aggravated offenses fell 24.7 percent.

Victims Remembered as Violent Crime Rates Discussed

The report notes a decline in violent crime rates for black men and women with a 10.4 percent drop, but a 24 percent rise in aggravated assault remains the only statistically significant change. Preliminary figures were released in September.
