Polio’s reach in Iowa recalls 1950 ward surge
The polio era in Iowa saw 560 patients admitted to a polio ward in 1950 and over 10 000 cases diagnosed from 1948 to 1954. Marion resident Michael Mehegan, age 4, contracted polio while in College Township area as he and a cousin, among few classmates, received vaccines. He endured therapy at St Luke’s Cedar Rapids and at home after showing symptoms post swimming pool. Public life dimmed as pools theaters and other venues closed during outbreaks.
