The passage critiques an Edwin Kantar style slam where North blasts after South opens hearts. Hearts defense is flawless for declarer but requires an unusual safety play to guard a bad spade break. East cashes ace of diamonds, returns diamonds, and dummy leads 10 of hearts. The queen falls, then a third trump lead seals the slam against any normal spade layout.

Endgame spade ruffing for a slam in bridge

In a bridge sequence the player should lead high spades first then ace of trumps. If East ruffs, slam still achievable. West shows out on second spade but the slam remains possible. Cash third high spade, ruff spade, ace king of clubs to discard diamond, lead club. If East discards diamond, ruff and last spade. If East discards spade, ruff, pull last trump and last spade is good.
