Ford seeks House inquiry on Supreme Court Justice Douglas

Washington UPI Gerald Ford announces a bill to create a select committee to probe Justice William O. Douglas for possible impeachment. The plan, backed by Ford after a bipartisan meeting, would require a 90 day report and a Senate trial if impeachment is voted. Ford cites obscenity, youth and rebellion writings and a foundation linked to Las Vegas casinos. He notes a Evergreen article and nude images as supporting evidence.

Iowa House Sets 5 P.M. Wednesday Adjournment

DES MOINES Iowa lawmakers moved to end the 1970 session by adopting a senate resolution that fixes final adjournment for 5 p.m. Wednesday. The vote occurred Monday afternoon by acclamation in the Iowa house.

Apollo 13 Aims for Moon Orbit amid Planned Lunar Crash

Apollo 13 astronauts James Lovell Fred Haise and John Swigert rest before a Tuesday lunar rendezvous while ground controllers steer the spent Saturn V stage toward a planned explosion on the moon. The 15 ton stage will strike near the Apollo 12 seismometer about 7:10 p.m. Tuesday producing tremors to study the moon’s interior.

Native Hero Helps During California Shootout

Ex marine Gary Dean Kness, 31, a Cedar Rapids native and Saugus resident, stepped from his car to aid a fallen officer in a Newhall gun battle that killed four California state highway patrolmen. He grabbed a shotgun and pistol, tried to pull the wounded officer to safety, and fired but the weapons were empty. Police say he may have fired the shot that felled one suspect as the exchange continued.

Grinnell College workers go on strike amid student boycott

Grinnell college maintenance workers, 91 members of the Teamsters, rejected a two year contract and began picketing in front of classrooms dorms and dining halls. Students boycotted classes after the Grinnell Student Senate urged joining the walkout and picket lines. The administration says the wage and fringe benefits demand would add about 38 percent to annual operating costs, far above the college offered 10 percent rise.

Iowa Senate OKs referral sales ban sent to governor

The Iowa Senate approved a bill 51-0 to strengthen consumer fraud law by outlawing referral sales. The measure would prohibit selling products on the promise of a refund if the buyer recruits others to buy, and it was sent to the governor for final action.

Fathers Solve Breakin Turn Sons In to Police

In Cedar Rapids two fathers marched their sons to the police station after their youths, 13 and 15, admitted taking part in a break in at Four Seasons hardware store. Police report 41 boxes of rifle shells, ten boxes of shotgun shells, two radios, two BB guns, an outdoor lantern and batteries were stolen. The fathers discovered loot Sunday morning and brought their sons in, ending the case.

Rockets Hit Saigon Amid 13 Day Offensive

Viet Cong rockets struck downtown Saigon for the first time in nearly four months killing four civilians and wounding 37. A 122 mm shell penetrated a theater near Thieu’s residence, injuring performers. another breached the main post office wall near the U.S. embassy. A rocket hit the Saigon river, damaging riverfront hotel windows.
