Delayed Fort Madison Prison Eyes Summer Occupancy
Officials with Iowa Department of Corrections aim to shift focus from delays that plagued the Fort Madison state penitentiary to its upcoming opening. Director Jerry Bartruff said occupancy is expected by late summer or early fall, with tests on geothermal and smoke evacuation, insulation updates, and a fire marshal check pending. Mediation with Walsh Construction proceeds, settlement likely, while on-site staff training restarts. The old 176 year old facility remains a contrast to the new open campus design.
