First Human Gene Therapy Used In Brain Disease
Neuro surgeons in San Diego injected genetically modified cells into the brain of a 60-year-old Oregon woman with early Alzheimer’s disease in a pioneering 11 hour procedure at the University of California, San Diego. Scientists harvest nerve growth factor genes from skin cells and aim to delay progression and improve life quality, acknowledging it may not be a cure. The case marks the first use of gene therapy for brain disease with federal approval for trials two years earlier.
