Planting season starts with dry soil in Iowa fields
The Iowa Crops and Weather report notes farmers began planting with mostly dry soils. Seeding progress includes 65 percent of primary seedbed and 75 percent fertilization, while topsoil moisture remains largely short to very short. Subsoil moisture shows similar deficits as weekly precipitation remains below normal. Jim Fawcett of Iowa State University cites uneven moisture and low soil temperatures delaying germination.
