Iowa Tops Midwest Quality of Life Survey

Tradex barter collapse spawns new Cedar Rapids system

After Tradex in Cedar Rapids faltered last fall, about 500 merchants faced losses from trade credits. A new barter exchange formed under manager Bifford Palmer aims to restore solvency with cash coverage. Trade credits, once owed, could not be recovered as members faced mounting losses. Credit holder Phil Tuetken owned 25,000 credits amid the turmoil. Jim Carroll, an early Tradex member, said the situation was a mess and he sought clarity from others.
