The Cedar Rapids Recreation Commission called Santa to assist Friday afternoon at Ambroz Recreation Center. Santa arrived in bunny ears and a tail and received a gift of carrots from the players. Santa is Phil Straub, a local recreation department employee. The two Cedar Rapids women pictured are Nina Tenenberg and Beulah Brown.
The Daily Iowan at the University of Iowa wins Newspaper of the Year from the Iowa Press Association. Cedar Valley Times, Vinton, takes general excellence for dailies. Daily Iowan ranks second, Ames Daily Tribune third. Awards cover education and editorial categories across divisions.
The 66th Iowa Press Association convention honored Mapleton, Sheldon, and Greenfield publishers with Master Editor Publisher Awards. Recipients were Robert Lyon of Lyon Publishing Co. serving four weeklies, Frank Morlan of the Sheldon Mail and Sun, and Ed Sidey of the Adair County Free Press.
The attorney for Dr. A E Mayner of Independence says talks are underway with the Iowa Board of Medical Examiners to resolve the case over supervision at the Oelwein clinic from December 15 to January 22 involving physician’s assistant William Ayers. A hearing is still planned for April 23 in Des Moines, with the board seeking license revocation. Mayner’s practice spans several towns and he has hinted at settlements and possible clinic closures.
The Iowa Commerce Commission ordered all electric utilities to offer time of day rates and make them mandatory if meter costs are offset by fuel and generation savings. The plan aims at energy conservation and equity in rates with seasonal options for smaller users. Iowa Electric Light & Power, Cedar Rapids, already offers such rates.
