Man Finally Nets 24-Pound Gulf Redfish After 20 Years

John Ross of 2100 11th St SW returns to the same Gulf charter boat after two decades and lands a 24 pound redfish, the day’s first catch, plus a 5 pound second fish. His son Bill and nephew Garth Elliott join the outing, with about 45 aboard. They fished 50 miles west of the delta under an oil rig shade in 50 feet of water using a surf casting rig with 30 pound test line and cut bait. The tale sits among broader Cedar Rapids fishing notes and upcoming bass events, including Virgil Ward’s Alaska trip on TV and the Cedar Rapids Bass Masters season opener at Thomas Hill Reservoir, Missouri.
