Iowa senate approved a 12 percent municipal share of the road use tax fund amid a heated urban rural fight. The measure sets 48 percent to primaries 40 percent to secondaries and 12 percent to municipalities based on population.
Iowa lawmakers approve a mobile home tax measure raising school tax assessments by about 60 percent while cutting large trailer registration fees. The bill allocates revenue differently by location, with residents outside cities sending 100 percent to schools and those inside municipal limits sharing 75 percent to schools and 25 percent to municipalities. Governor Norman Erbe is expected to sign.
W A Holloway regional GSA commissioner announced a contract for interior and exterior painting at the West Union post office has been awarded to Midwest Improvement Co of Albert Lea Minnesota. Their bid of 1765 was the lowest of 14 submitted.
Charles Nichols 42, a World War II veteran and resident of the Veterans Administration Domiciliary in Clinton, was found Monday in two feet of water in a drainage ditch. Missing since last Thursday, Nichols likely fell into the ditch and had been in the water several days, according to Acting County Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas G. Wellman. The body was discovered by two local boys, John Robbins and Lyle Johnson, while playing on a railroad trestle nearby.

An attorney general's opinion says school buses must follow Iowa speed limits on interstate highways, with a 50 mph allowance for certain educational trips. City clerks in smaller municipalities must publish a condensed statement of council meetings, minutes approval not required.
J. Sidney Crowe of West Union received a 50-year Masonic pin and certificate after serving in all lodge offices. Hans P. Larsen will be honored as a 50-year member of the Quasqueton lodge at a special meeting on April 21 at 8 p.m., with John Ames of Traer presenting the pin and certificate.
Sen. Martin Wiley opposed a 12 percent flat allocation for cities and towns in the Iowa road fund. As head of the highway subcommittee he backed a sliding scale that would grant cities 10 percent in 1962, 12 percent in 1963, and 14 percent in 1964 and beyond, but the measure was amended to a straight 12 percent. He argued it would rob primary and secondary systems of dollars while cities gain through growth, urging a coordinated road program for Iowa.
East Iowans face multiple drunk driving charges with various bonds and court steps. Toledo Harvey Lee, about 45, jailed in Tama county on second offense with $1,000 bond. bound over to grand jury. Sigourney Lewis Rudd, Rose Hill, Keokuk county jail on $350 bond. bound over. Clarence Wilhite, Keswick, $500 bond. bound over. Lloyd L Ferns, Iowa City, 64, bound over to district court on second offense with $1,000 bond. David Clement Griffin, 45, route 2, pled guilty, fined $300 and costs.
Norlan Woodard of Hedrick, age 18, was arraigned on a charge of contributing to juvenile delinquency. He waived to the grand jury and posted a $250 appearance bond.
Senate payroll records show former U S Senator Thomas E Martin employed his wife Dorris as a 15188 69 annual assistant clerk at his retirement January 1. The quarterly pay rose from 14380 56. top aide Jane C Bittner earned 17122 20 as Martin left the Senate.
