French backers of a campaign to curb alcohol intake face hurdles after Premier Mendes-France quits. The national assembly repealed a decree raising bar license fees and earmarking revenue for the anti patronage effort. The new cabinet vows funds later, but Mendes-France’s committee has 22,857 dollars for staff and travel.
A French government move to subsidize three cents per quart on cheap wine shipments to overseas territories sparks renewed battles over colonial alcohol policy. Premier Edgar Faure shifts tactics from Mendes France's confrontational stance to a diplomatic approach, while cabinet decrees aim to curb hard liquor exports and push soft drink parlors. The assembly resumes next month to decide limits on pre 10 a.m. sales and advertising freedoms.
