Saigon reports a weekly Vietnam casualty toll lower than any since the spring offensive began. The tally shows 222 Americans, 246 South Vietnamese, and 3,220 enemy killed in action, with 1,285 Americans wounded and 780 hospitalized. totals rise to 33,863 American KIA and 215,484 wounded.
U S army doctors say epidemic malaria seriously impairs combat effectiveness of some North Vietnamese and Viet Cong units. About 10 percent of troops monthly are ill, with seven to ten days lost per case, and falciparum malaria ranges from 50 to 100 percent in some units. In Long Binh 28 of 208 captured North Vietnamese treated had malaria. Civilians in coastal and delta regions are rising cases, likely brought by North Vietnamese troops. Army malaria prevention includes drugs, insecticides, and repellents. only 135 cases among 363,000 soldiers this month. Front lines saw limited fighting with B 52s striking base camps, 89 enemy killed in six clashes, two American helicopters lost, and Montana Mauler end announced as operations reduced pressure below the DMZ.
President Nixon told NATO ministers on the 20th anniversary of the alliance that allies stand ready to turn defense into a hand of friendship with the Soviet bloc as conditions change.
