Linn County Second in Iowa Income Tax Payments

Linn county ranked second in total income taxes paid to the state for the last fiscal year, with $2,325,188 from individuals and corporations. Polk county led with $4,700,000, while Scott county was third at $1,968,318. The Iowa Tax Commission noted 283,708 Iowans did not owe state income tax, including 98,564 farmers, and total state income taxes amounted to $32,725,300.39 from 841,098 returns, with 567,390 paying into the treasury.

Iowa Tax Report Shows Income Brackets and Revenue Totals

The report notes retailers paid 624,790 in corporation taxes with 24,057 returns filed. Most Iowans earned 3,000 to 4,000 annually, totaling 146,611 filers. The 2,000 to 3,000 bracket had 135,436 taxpayers, and 78,881 earned over 5,000. Individual income taxes totaled 28,989,760, with corporate taxes at 3,735,539.

United Air Lines said he is among more than 165 contractors nationwide with a perfect record in 1957, and he has worked in Cedar Rapids since 1952 during Perfect Shipping Month observances.

Tama Legion Units To Host Convention

The Tama Legion and auxiliary will host the 3rd district Legion and auxiliary spring conference in Tama on April 21. Several hundred are expected to attend. Men meet at the Legion hall while the auxiliary gathers in the Lutheran church basement. Co chairmen are Joe B. Dunlap and Jean McMurray.

John Carville 66 longtime bank cashier in Mechanicsville died Thursday. Services set for Saturday at 9 30 a m in St Marys church with rosary Friday at 8 p m in Horner funeral home. Burial in town. Born February 16 1892, he came there after service in World War I.

Starting as a bookkeeper in the Trust and Savings bank, he was later named cashier and served in that capacity until he retired in 1952. Survivors include his wife, Tru, and a sister, Mrs. Ed O'Con nell of Cedar Rapids.

Price Propped on Million Bushels Of Corn Daily

DES MOINES AP farmers placed 25,600,000 bushels of corn under government price support during the month ended March 15, averaging nearly one million bushels per day. The total brings 84,764,866 bushels of 1957 corn under loan or purchase. About 58 percent came from farmers who overplanted allotments. such corn pays $1.06 a bushel in Iowa, versus $1.36 for compliant production. Projections estimate 120 million bushels to be supported, with May 31 as the deadline. Nationwide price support rose to 259 million bushels, Iowa accounting for about a third, signaling greater storage pressure there.

Great Decisions Group Summary Meeting Set in Cedar Rapids

Rex Conn farm editor of The Gazette will speak at a Sunday 8 p.m. meeting at Peoples Church Cedar Rapids for the Great Decisions group summary. Nine local study groups began in March to discuss major questions of the day and have sent decisions to the Council of World Questions and Iowa’s congressmen and state department. Each study group will have representatives at the meeting and others may attend per sponsors.
