Army Moves To Speed Up Officer Trial

Washington AP The War Department moved to speed trials of officers and enlisted men charged with mistreating U S soldiers at the Lichfield detention camp England. Undersecretary Royall said one officer would go on trial next week and as many as four courts martial would proceed with 15 or 16 lawyers to London for either side. He defended the trials as vigorous and denied efforts to shield higher officers. Two enlisted men began first to compel testimony later if needed. He dismissed claims of a whitewash as lawyers' noise and said the department cannot interfere with trials any more than the President with the Supreme Court.
