Cedar Rapids fights next flood with dike work and inspections

Arlo Jacobson reports that Cedar Rapids will survey and inspect the dike system after a near flood. A temporary dike near the Sixteenth Avenue bridge gives way to a concrete effort as excavation for a permanent dike proceeds near a new Gas Glaser plant. Mayor Meaghan will convene agencies including the Army Corps of Engineers and Geological Survey to review flood control efforts while health officials urge sand bag safety and note typhoid and tetanus inoculations given at the Coliseum for flood helpers.

Sloan retires from air force to join Los Angeles firm

Donald C. Sloan of Cedar Rapids retires after 21 years with the U S Air Force at MATS Scott Field Illinois where he served as deputy chief of staff for materiel and commanded the 38th Service Group. He will join an electronics firm in Los Angeles and was decorated with the Legion of Merit and other honors. Sloan’s career included World War II service in Europe and Africa and leadership in Europe prior to MATS. He and his wife Helen have two children.

Housing Census Reveals Cedar Rapids Best Dilapidation Rate

The 1960 census housing report shows Cedar Rapids has the lowest share of dilapidated units among Iowa’s five largest cities, with 2% dilapidated and 68% owner-occupied housing. It lists 30,288 total city housing units, 29,538 occupied, 20,364 owner-occupied, and 9,174 renter-occupied.

Eleanor Peters to Present Spring Tonic at Cedar Rapids Chamber

15000 View Biblical Art Festival Opens in Houston

Sponsors estimated 15000 attended a unique religious art show titled the festival of the Bible in the Arts held in a Jewish synagogue. Performers interpreted biblical themes through dance song and music alongside paintings and sculpture valued at about 1 million dollars.

The first permanent U S mission in the new Brazilian capital was inaugurated by Justice Minister Oscar Pedroso Horta. President Eisenhower laid the cornerstone during his visit last year.

Add 2 C R Quartets to Parade Bill

Cedar Rapids barber shop quartets were added to the April 22 Parade of Barber Shop Quartets at Memorial Coliseum. Parade Chairman Dick Sharp noted the additions raise participating groups. some old-time quartets are being regrouped. New entrants include Face Cards and Chord Hoppers with member lines listed. Vigortones, Evans quartet from Salt Lake City, and the Nubbins of Spencer will also perform. Evans quartet is the current SPEBSQSA international champion.

Rapids Songfest to Feature Quartet Appearances

Sharp said Rapids quartet members may appear at the lth annual songfest on April 22, sponsored by the Cedar Rapids SPEB. Exchange tickets costing $1 are available and can be mailed to the Coliseum box office for reserved seats.

Students to Present Spring Concert at McKinley

McKinley junior high schedules a Friday 7 30 p m spring concert in the school auditorium led by Peter Haug for the orchestra and Jack Roesch for the ninth grade choir and eighth grade girls chorus. The final selection is A Mighty Fortress is Our God performed by 150 students. Tickets are available at the door or from orchestra and chorus members.
