Iowa Episcopal Bishop Smith marks decade as Iowa church growth follows

Des Moines AP reports Rt. Rev. Gordon W. Smith completes 10 years as Iowa Episcopal bishop. During his term, baptismal membership rose 30 percent to about 20 000, clergy numbers up 50 percent, and churches up 12 percent. He leads Lent’s Bishop's Crusade urging regular church attendance, evangelism by laity, and daily scripture reading. He travels roughly 50 000 miles yearly, oversees confirmations, and chairs education efforts while serving on multiple church boards. Born Kalamazoo, he studied at Kalamazoo College and General Theological Seminary.

Sunrise services set by Cedar Rapids council

Two sunrise Easter services are sponsored by the Youth Council of the Cedar Rapids Marion Area Council of Churches. Marion service at 6 a.m. at Marion Rural Community School with rain plan at Marion Christian church. Cedar Rapids service at 5 30 a.m. at Cedar Memorial cemetery with rain plan at Coe College chapel. Dr John Walker Coe chaplain will speak The Sanity of Easter. Jefferson High School choir will provide music. Youth leaders Joyce Silka and David Breed direct. Walker came to Coe from Occidental College last fall.

Vinton Pastor Resigns to Lead Des Moines Church

The Rev. Raymond W. Fechner, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton since 1951, has resigned to become pastor of Our Savior Church in Des Moines. He and his family will stay in Vinton until the end of May before moving to Des Moines.

A native of Toddville he heads the Iowa Society of Christian Churches in Des Moines and was elected to the international group's presidency. The Marion Ministerial Union and cooperating churches sponsor the service with music by the Christian church choir.

Iowa Friends Accept Congregation in Cedar Rapids

The Cedar Rapids Friends Meeting was formally accepted Sunday as a participant in the Iowa Yearly Meeting Conservative. Acceptance occurred at a business meeting in the YMCA where services were held, with visiting committees from Paullina West Branch and Whittier. Helen Soukup Cecil Haworth and Florence Haworth were named representatives to the West Branch Quarterly Meeting on April 23. Cedar Rapids is the first established since 1893 when Hickory Grove Meeting began near West Branch.

Washington AP: Chief of Chaplains Maj. Gen. Terence P. Finnegan says attendance at air force chapel services surpassed 12 million in fiscal 1959. Chaplains performed 6,127 marriages, 18,862 baptisms, and conducted 2,450 funerals.
