Sit or Stand Bingo Tested in Council Bluffs

Victor Langstrom announced a new sit or stand bingo test where players pay for table space only if seated. those who stand pay nothing. Municipal Judge Allen Ardell dismissed the charge for lack of information to base a ruling. County Attorney Don Jackson said the Ardell decision will be sent to Attorney General Larson to decide on appeal options.

Chairmen Are Appointed for Cancer Drive

Fifteen eastern Iowa campaign chairmen were named for the 1950 Linn county Cancer Control fund drive. Marion will be chaired by Mrs. Lumer Lorence. the drive aims to reach every county family by mail or personal visits and 60 percent of funds stay in Iowa for education research and patient services.

Firsthand Iowa UFO Sightings Reported in Burlington

James E. Reardon a mail clerk at the Iowa ordnance plant described a 14 foot cigar shaped object with blue white flames along the sides and tail while Bonnie Weaver a Burlington golf club pro said a high altitude fast moving craft flashed and left a sparks trail. Mrs Paul Niemann a Burlington housewife compared it to a folded silver umbrella. All three said they saw the object around 10 am Thursday.

University of Iowa to hire housing inspector after survey

The University of Iowa plans a full time housing inspector following a survey by the office of student affairs prompted by the Bednasek murder case. Dean Walter Goetsch reports most of about 1,100 approved houses have been inspected and remaining checks will be completed. He cites improvements with landlords and adherence to the Code of Student Life to prevent violations in off campus housing.

Frustrating Fence Stolen From Street in Algona

Algona police report a fence John Grotte erected in February to protest taxes on a street area in front of his home has been stolen. Grotte plans a sign reading private drive while the city says his fence was within his rights.

University Instructor Descendant Of Mormon Founding Father

Iowa City report notes Oliver R. Smith a journalism graduate assistant at S.A.J. on leave from Brigham Young University. Smith, born in Davenport, traces lineage to Joseph Smith. He led a life of study and missionary work and will resume as department head at Brigham Young after earning a mass communications degree.

Prison Journalists Produce Praised Hawkeye Magazine

Inmates at the Iowa Men's Reformatory publish The Hawkeye, a 32 page monthly prison magazine. Despite no formal training, staff earn 15 cents daily while delivering fiction, news, and humor to 900 inmates and 353 paid subscribers. The publication features linoleum printing, prison photography, and outside manuscript submissions.
