Pope’s secret cardinal dies with mystery unsolved
Vatican confirms Pope John Paul II kept a cardinal named in pectore hidden at his death. The 15 page testament notes no disclosure of the cardinal’s identity, as only 183 named peers will know their rank, while the mystery man cannot join the College of Cardinals or vote for a new pope. Speculation points to leaders in China or Russia, with Joseph Zen Ze-Kim and Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz among candidates.
