Plans to restore Johnson County Poor Farm stalled

The Johnson County Board of Supervisors has not decided on future use for the nearly 150 acre Poor Farm site southwest of Highway 218 Melrose Avenue. A completed JCCOG study envisions 120 acres for a preservation area with 45 adjacent acres for low density housing and farm buildings restored as needed. The plan serves as guidance and does not commit immediate work.

Burma Shave signs and memory of Bud Louis Rexall

Iowa City native Bud Louis grew up behind the counter of his grandfather's drug store, the Louis Rexall Drug Store, where he dipped up ice cream and heard town stories. The piece recalls Burma Shave roadside signs from the 1920s onward, Clinton O'Dell's marketing stunts, and a tale of Arlis French and his wife traveling to Mars in space suits with 900 Burma Shave jars.
