A Nature study by David Bercovici and Yanick Ricard suggests Earth's lithosphere fractured into plates through a self weakening feedback driven by convection in the mantle. The model places the start of plate formation about 4 billion years ago with complete fractures by 3 billion years ago and explains Venus lacks plates due to higher temperatures preventing lasting damage.
