Legislature approves official Iowa tartan
The Iowa Legislature approved resolutions establishing an official Iowa tartan as a district style symbol. Ann Gerdts of the Scottish Heritage Society of Iowa described the colors symbolizing sky rivers fields soil and crops and noted the design will be registered in Scotland to prevent duplication. Des Moines native Mark Osweiler created the Iowa tartan and intends to give Iowa its own state design joining about 23 other states and some cities with similar recognitions.
