Cedar Rapids Cancer Crusade announces four chairmen for special gifts committees. David Ruml will head one panel in addition to general drive duties. The other chairs are B. J. Meltzer B. T. Perrine and Peter L. Topic. About 400 women volunteers handle general solicitation.

Anna Becicka 92 of 11 miles southeast of Cedar Rapids died at 9 30 p m Friday after a long illness. Born in Czechoslovakia Sept 19 1858 she lived in the area 73 years. Surviving include daughters Mary Buresh and Mrs Emil Smahel two sons Louis Jerry and Joseph 12 12 grandchildren 15 great grandchildren two sisters and a brother. Funeral at Brosh chapel Monday 2 p m conducted by Rev Zdenek F Pauk burial in Shueyville cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
Services for A J Bowen hog buyer at Wilson and Company will be held at 2 p m Sunday in Federated church Central City. Burial at Mt Clark cemetery. Bowen died at a son’s home in Central City. Mrs. Fern Marie Null age 58, a Linn county resident for 58 years, died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 10 15 a m Saturday after a brief illness She was born in Linn county on August 31 1892 Survivors include Arlene Ritchison of Cedar Rapids five sons Clifford James Donald Maurice and Marvin F Null all of Cedar Rapids and Linn county references
Marion Turner and thirteen grandchildren will attend a service at Turner chapel at 1 30 p m Tuesday conducted by Rev Floyd Hineshaw of St James Methodist. Burial follows at Cedar Memorial cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel after 1 p.m Sunday.
Bridget M Drahozal 37 of 2040 D Street SW Cedar Rapids died in a local hospital at 5 05 a m Saturday after a brief illness. Born Spillville May 18 1913 she lived in Cedar Rapids 22 years. Survived by husband Rudolph and seven children Bernard Edward Catherine Mary Lou Dennis Michael Theresa at home two sisters Mrs Wendl Drahozal Cedar Rapids Mrs Louis Novak Spillville and a brother Walter Hruska Spillville. Services at Polansky chapel and St Ludmila church will be announced later.
Gen. MacArthur cables that 120000 South Korean reserves were released as a domestic decision by the Republic of Korea and the United States government, with no American involvement. He notes the issue involves basic political decisions beyond his authority. The U.S. State Department calls it Korea’s domestic decision and says the released men were not combat troops.

The $75 000 libel and slander suit filed by Alger Hiss against Whittaker Chambers was dismissed in federal court. Judge W Calvin Chesnut signed an order dismissing the case with prejudice, barring further action based on the same accusations.
The Defense Transport Administration endorsed a proposed 4,944,973 dollar RFC loan to a Detroit firm to fund the construction or acquisition of ships for transporting iron ore. The action aims to bolster sea logistics for ore movement.
Plaintiffs seek appointment of temporary and principal receivers for Milan Packing Company of Milan Illinois, with Cedar Rapids as business address, before Judge Hamiel in Linn County Iowa. Milo Stanley Prusek, 35, of 1700 Fifteenth Avenue SE, pleads innocent to a second offense drunk driving when arraigned before Judge Charles Penningroth. Court records show a January 15, 1949 drunk driving conviction in Linn County.
Ivan Gilmore, a farmer on Marion route 3, was appointed to the Linn county board of education at a Cedar Rapids meeting Friday night. He will fill the unexpired term of Miles Sutera of Robins.
The county board named Gilmore to its vacancy and renewed Walter A. Shupp as county superintendent of schools for three years. Ernest Kosek announced the appointments at a Saturday meeting held at the Roosevelt hotel. Other directors listed include Emmett Shaffer Lisbon Blinks Lisbon and Louis Hinton Coggon.
Ralph J. Duffy a farmer near Williamsburg received an indeterminate sentence not to exceed seven years in the Anamosa reformatory for false uttering of a check. District Judge Floyd Philbrick suspended the term upon restitution. He had passed several bad checks including a $20 note at Twin Towers cafe and attempted to cash another in Cedar Rapids. The checks were drawn on Farmers State Bank in Marion. Duffy was charged by county attorney's information and arraigned January 4.
Two collection suits were filed in Linn county district court Friday and one resulted in a judgment Saturday. DV Laboratories Inc. sued W. W. Capps for 194.43 covering rent and utility bills, with judgment for that amount and costs by Judge Charles Penningroth. Virgil Stahr seeks 171 against Delbert L. Yocum for the unpaid balance of a 231 loan from last September.
A man who says he is a retired army colonel was arrested in Washington D C for writing a false seventy dollar check on February three in Cedar Rapids. Fred J Wheeler, 44, is accused of passing the bad check at the Roosevelt hotel to obtain cash. The check was drawn on a Pensacola Florida bank and signed with rank. The bank said the account was closed. Wheeler is being held for Linn county authorities and refuses extradition.
Linn county petit jury panel reporting date moved back six days. Court Clerk Arthur Axmear announced the new time and date, with jurors to report at 9 a.m. April 16. The change affects scheduling and Court operations for the April term.

Robert J. Berends, 18, of 1265 Twentieth Avenue SW, began serving two concurrent sentences in Linn County jail. Judge Floyd Philbrick sentenced him Saturday to 90 days for falsifying a liquor permit application and 30 days for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He had been free on bond on both charges since last fall, with arrest dates November 1 and November 7.
Dorothy L. Blahnik filed an accounting suit against John Pifer and requested dismissal. The court granted the dismissal without prejudice on Saturday as requested by the plaintiff.
President Truman formed an emergency panel to decide if one million railroad workers can receive a six cent per hour raise under the wage stabilization program. The raise stems from a March 1 agreement between railroads and unions for non operating staff. The panel may report quickly to Eric Johnston, with recommendations the administrator can implement.
City council will receive bids on public liability and property damage insurance by April 30 announced by Finance Commissioner L. D. Burgus. Lists of city property to be covered and bid instructions will be available Monday. Bidders will have three weeks to submit proposals for the new policies.
