Traffic projects raise Cedar Rapids Marion costs and lanes

Cedar Rapids and Marion face two major road projects, costing about 1.9 million dollars. F E Paving Co. won the bid to widen 16th Avenue from 18th Street to Williams Boulevard and repave the intersection at 16th Avenue and Williams Boulevard. Traffic will shift to one lane each way May through October, with no road closures. State funds cover the Cedar Rapids work. Meese fills two top Justice Department posts

Iowa State Budget Plan Expands Human Services and Education

The plan to spend an additional 52 million in state revenue funds 23.7 million for human services including 2.5 million for a 3.25 percent raise in Aid to Dependent Children benefits and 1.5 million to raise nursing home payments. It also adds 2.3 million for private college tuition grants, 1 million for state economic development advertising, 2 million for livestock research facilities at Iowa State University, 3.6 million for a supplemental human services appropriation to cover Medicaid and foster care costs, 3.5 million for merger area school salary increases, 1 million for emergency medical services, 600 thousand for historic building exhibits, and up to 11 million for a new boiler at the University of Northern Iowa.
