Iowans Teaching Elsewhere Why Some Stay or Leave
Iowa teachers face low pay compared with Florida and Texas. Cal Woods in Florida earns 17500 while Iowa offers around 11000. Others like Michelle Mumm and John Hamann left Iowa for higher wages, with Mission Texas paying up to 18700 for U.S. history. Some veterans, such as Lynn Grulke and Ann White, moved to Harlingen Texas for music teaching jobs. Experts predict a looming teacher turnover as salary gaps persist, with Charles Case noting a 25 percent Iowa turnover and a national 50 percent rate.
