Columbus Basile of Chicago is elected vice president for operations of the Link Belt Speed er Corporation Cedar Rapids plant. Officers re elected were D W Lehti president G H Olson vice president and H E Kellogg treasurer and secretary. Basile will base in Cedar Rapids having been shop superintendent at the Caldwell plant in Chicago since December 1947. He joined Link Belt in 1928, later joining Sears Roebuck before returning to Link Belt in 1941.
Dr. Bernard Iddings Bell, known Cedar Rapids educator and author of Crisis in Education, will be commencement speaker at Coe College in the fieldhouse on June 3. He will receive an honorary doctor of humanities degree and deliver The Future of the Independent College.
Austin Christwell Mulvany 80 longtime Cedar Rapids resident died in a local hospital at 9 35 a m Wednesday after a long illness Born October 30 1869 in Ross county Ohio he moved to Cedar Rapids from Oakville Iowa Survived by four sons John V Pleasant C Lloyd T and Gerald M nine grandchildren Private services will be held at Turner chapel at 1 30 p m Saturday with Rev Frank Ward Burial at Cedar Memorial cemetery
Ralph Young of near Palo was killed Wednesday when his car was struck by a train at a crossing near Palo. Services will be Friday at 3 30 p m in the Beatty chapel with Rev J Arthur Young pastor of Kenwood Methodist church officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial cemetery. Friends may call at the church.
Frances Novotny 82 died at 1 15 p m Wednesday at her daughter's home near Swisher after a lingering illness. Born in Czechoslovakia October 15 1867 she came to the United States in 1873 and lived near Swisher since 1891. Surviving are four sons William Joseph Henry and Fred all of Shueyville area and nine grandchildren. Services 2 p m Saturday at Brush chapel conducted by Rev Galen Hershey burial in Shueyville cemetery.
Georgia Humphreys 80 formerly of 1914 Park Avenue SE Cedar Rapids died at 6 40 p m Wednesday widow of Levi H Humphreys Born Dubuque June 12 1869 she lived in Cedar Rapids 49 years member of St Pauls Methodist church Survived by two daughters Neva Wager and Ione Plate both of Cedar Rapids two grandchildren and two great grandchildren Service at Beatty chapel 1 30 p m Friday conducted by Rev A B Curran
W. F. Fitzgerald 64 former Cedar Rapids resident died Tuesday at his Chicago home. Services will be Monday at Blessed Sacrament in Chicago with burial at St. Adalbert cemetery. A daughter Mrs. Ray Nippe 35 of Twenty first avenue SW survives.
Johns Hopkins scholar Lattimore rebutted McCarthy accusations of disloyalty and espionage as he prepared to testify about alleged Communist ties. He criticized McCarthy for misusing immunity and demanded the senator resign if he cannot prove his charges in court.
The Linn county grand jury returned four indictments three secret and nine no bills in the April term. Only public indictment named Donald E. Jones 32 charged with assault with intent to commit murder for menacing Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Rupe with a butcher knife during the night of March 16 17. Jones held on 5000 bond. No bills covered nine other cases including Donald A Curran and five men charged with rape. Some no bills involved commitment to the state hospital for the insane in Independence. Additional no bills listed for gas tax false affidavits desertion drunkenness attempted breaking and entering and other cases. The jury did not inspect the county home or jail. St Luke hospital awarded judgment 12962 against Mrs. Fred Sturm with 5 percent interest from Feb 3 1950.
Lattimore criticized McCarthy and the so-called China lobby as tools of violent propaganda against aid to Nationalists and Chiang Kai-shek. He warned that opposing views face abuse and that government officials must be free to consult diverse opinions to keep policy effective.
About 1,000 Iowa Democrats are expected to attend a $4 roast beef dinner in Des Moines to hear Vice President Alben W. Barkley speak at the statewide Jackson Day dinner. Barkley arrives by plane around 4 p.m. with 6:30 p.m. program. attendance may exceed 1,000 as many come to hear him.

He noted about 400000 Iowans live with cancer and many deaths could be prevented by early detection and treatment. He praised the Iowa division of the American Cancer Society and urged support for the Linn County Cancer Crusade drive opening Tuesday, detailing how funds are allocated to state and national cancer research.
