President Truman pressed Congress to act quickly to counter international aggression and warned against tax cuts and GOP plans for 10 to 30 percent cuts in personal income levies. He urged restraint on profits, highlighted a budget surplus, and called for reducing the national debt before tax changes, at a Jefferson Day event.
Interior Secretary Krug rejected John L. Lewis proposal to shut all but two government seized mines pending safety checks. Collisson said the Krug-Lewis contract allows local union safety committees to withdraw workers from mines deemed imminently dangerous. Uncertainty looms as the six day mourning stoppage ends, with many mines potentially remaining closed.
Elma Iowa AP reports 69 year old Barney Rich wed 64 year old Jessie Mervin after two months of letters. The Cresco arrival drew a large welcoming crowd as the couple married, with cheering and a festive reception. Jessie said the Lonely Hearts club matched them and Barney’s kitchen duties now include cooking.
Strong winds up to 70 mph hit Cedar Rapids and surrounding areas causing damaged wires trees and broken windows. A Taylorcraft plane at Cedar Rapids airport was overturned and a large window at Padzensky’s Auto Market was shattered. University of Iowa barracks roof blown off by 55 mph gusts while students were away for Easter.
The Fort Dearborn tanker, wrecked in a March storm 1,100 miles northwest of Honolulu, broke its tow line for the third time Friday night. Navy tug Tawakoni continued salvage efforts as a new line was prepared. Twelve men were lost and 32 rescued.
Storms rain snow and floods sweep the country on Easter Eve with four deaths reported. Heavy rainfall and high winds disrupt travel and damage property from Michigan to New York and into New England. Tornadoes strike Missouri and Oklahoma as record snowfalls hit Montana and nearby regions.
Ottumwa Iowa AP Charles Stiles president of the Ottumwa Milk Producers Association said the strike since April 2 that cut local milk supplies by about 80 percent has ended with a settlement satisfactory to both sides. A milk processor said the agreement allows resuming shipments at market completion of negotiations. Truckers will start bringing in milk Sunday and supply should be normal soon. The processor declined to quote a price. The association had sought 3.65 per hundred pounds for milk testing 3.5 percent butterfat rather than 3.35 and recognition of the association plus processors would consult with it before price cuts.
In Chicago a flock of chickens sought safety atop their coop when heavy rains flooded the yard. A drake and a duck drowned in about three feet of water.

Cedar Rapids City Lines buses were prepared to transport churchgoers on Easter Sunday under an 80 AFL drivers agreement. No fares will be charged and buses will run from 7 am to 1 pm following regular schedules. Union officials reported no end to the wage offer despite the armistice.
The Moscow radio said Russia filed a protest note to Athens on April 1 charging Greece with publishing a fake interview attributed to Stalin. Soviet Ambassador Rodionov was summoned to Moscow. An Athens source noted Soviet embassy staff passports were sent for exit visas. US agency UP called the interview a complete fake.
The National Conference of Christians and Jews announced that Mrs Franklin D Roosevelt would receive its 1947 award for her personal work on human relations and to commemorate the ideals and achievements of her husband Franklin D Roosevelt.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee endorsed Truman’s Greece Turkey aid program 13 to 0 urging swift Senate action. The plan allocates 400 million dollars in economic and limited military assistance with no combat forces to be sent to Greece.
The Chrysler Plymouth division cut prices across all models by 25 to 55 dollars amid wage dispute negotiations with the CIO United Auto Workers. New factory list prices show reductions on Deluxe and Special Deluxe models, including sedans and coupes, with the lowest price near 1,117.50 after discounts.
Fraser of Cedar Rapids president of the Order of Railway Conductors is named a delegate to the Inland Transport committee of the ILO. He will represent the Railway Labor Executives Association at the May 6 to 15 Geneva meeting, one of two American delegates. The ILO affiliate AF of L links to a UN department proposal.
Thomas Hardy a 47 year old flagman at the First Avenue E railroad crossing was reported in fair condition after Friday night accident. He suffered a fractured leg and scalp lacerations when thrown 100 feet from a car driven by Willard Freed 29 of Iowa City. Freed was charged with reckless driving. case postponed until Monday to assess injuries.
In Munich former prisoners of Dachau will return to the camp site for an international reunion on May 11. The event, approved by the American Military Government, is expected to draw former inmates from many countries to commemorate and share their experiences.
A Danish sexton at Aarhus cathedral narrowly escaped death when a three ton bell toppled or swung loose during a Saturday night incident and menaced the worker.
Washington reports labor department talks continued as a nationwide telephone strike loomed for Monday. Union leader Roy A Anderson warned 340 600 workers across Iowa Minnesota Nebraska and the Dakotas would walk out at 6 am local time unless terms are met. Secretary Schwellenbach urged workers to keep working and pressed for arbitration while negotiations extended late into the night.
In Des Moines district, about 800 management workers will cover operations if a strike closes in at 6 am Monday. Emergency handling will apply to distance calls and communities with manual systems, while dial systems may continue until equipment fails. Cities likely affected include Dubuque Mason City Ottumwa Keokuk Ames Oska and Boone.
