Radio tagging reveals wing dams key for river walleyes
Iowa biologist John Pitlo tracked 50 walleyes and 30 sauger on the Upper Mississippi from Fulton Illinois to Dubuque. He found walleyes concentrate along wing dams and channel edges about 75 percent of the time in only 25 percent of the water. Sauger favor main channel borders and wing dams about 69 percent in 10 percent of water. Spawn occurs late March to mid April at 46 to 49 degrees.
