Iowa state budget chief Ronald Mosher cut 40 million from income projections due to lower than expected tax receipts and high unemployment. The move, the third forecast cut since July 1982, leaves a slim 7.4 million balance for June 30 and prompts Gov. Branstad to reduce Community Development Loan Program funding.
A vast April blizzard and 100 mph winds cripple Western states from Utah to Nebraska, shutting highways, toppling a train, knocking out power for thousands, with up to 15 foot drifts and at least five deaths. Utah's Hill AFB closed. Union Pacific report notes 12 flatbed cars toppled. Kansas and Colorado utilities report thousands without power.
Gloria Swanson, famed for her glamorous film persona, died in her sleep at New York Hospital at age 84.
