Skies in Iowa should stay fair to partly cloudy through Friday with low 30s to low 40s and highs in the 60s to 70s by Thursday. Readings cool to the 60s in the northwest Friday. Normal April values and station data are listed, including daily highs, lows, rain, and pool levels at multiple cities.
The session convened at 10:10 a.m. with debate on three bills, two sent back to committee and one deferred. Six bills were received including a measure to appropriate 25000 to study instituting a 12 month school year. Recess for lunch, then 10:20 a.m. Senate passed a non-controversial bill, caucuses and lunch followed by reconvening and adjournment to 9 a.m. Tuesday April 3. Also reported are numerous birth notices and a long list of local obituaries and civil action items.
The court deferred ruling on several issues including the constitutional right to view any film, a 1970 California school busing consent law, Lackawanna New York housing discrimination against blacks, a draft law religious liberty challenge by Roman Catholics, and the use of undercover agents with hidden transmitters to trap narcotics violators.
The Supreme Court affirmed a Monroe based three judge ruling that state colleges may require all unmarried undergraduates to live in dormitories. The decision, 2-1, was issued in a case brought by three Louisiana Polytechnic Institute students at Ruston.
Linn County supervisors remain restricted to a $13,000 local share for ambulance startup, withholding full funding and rejecting a countywide uniform fee plan. City officials fault the stance as lacking good faith, while Emmons argues the service should be self-supporting and legally enabled to levy funding.
The state faces a tax package dispute as Democrats criticize a sales tax hike and signal support for vetoes, while Gov. Ray, a Republican, holds his January budget proposal to raise income tax rates by about 33 percent. In Cedar Rapids, Marvel F Huston, 56, died after a long illness, a lifelong local resident born October 2, 1914, survived by wife Vlasta, a daughter, two sons, siblings, and grandchildren. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at Chapel of Memories with burial at Cedar Memorial.

Chester Over Mitchell of 908 Sixteenth Avenue SE Cedar Rapids died Monday. Born June 25 1905 in Shobonier Illinois he was married to Colleen De Lude on May 24 1956 in Moline. Surviving are wife a son James Ronald of Morley and five grandchildren. Funeral 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St Wenceslaus Catholic Church Rev Clarence Frana. Burial St John’s. Friends may call Turner chapel east.
Katy Louise Fry aged 72 months, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan L. Fry of route one Cedar Rapids, died Sunday after a long illness. Born August 19, 1970, in Cedar Rapids, she is survived by her parents, two sisters Vicky and Peggy, a brother Jerry, and grandparents Lester Nicola of Sigourney and Orval Fry of Fairfield. Services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at Chapel of Memories with Rev. Charles Mehaffey officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial. Friends may visit at Cedar Memorial funeral home from noon Tuesday until 1 p.m. Wednesday.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth A. Walton of 1818 Avenue NE died Sunday shortly after birth. Survived by parents, grandparents Howard Barta of Cedar Rapids and Robert Walton of Anamosa, and three great grandparents T. W. Baker and Albert N. Walton of Anamosa. Services pending at Stewart funeral home. friends may call Tuesday after 4 p.m.

Mrs James Craft 24 of Oxford died Friday night in a automobile accident near Nevada. A University of Iowa student she lived earlier in Cedar Rapids before moving to Oxford. Survived only by husband. Services Tuesday at 2 PM Congregational Church Humboldt. Body at Lind Hart Funeral Home Humboldt.
City officials report overtime costs totaling 830 dollars in early 1971 as Cedar Rapids scrutiniz es computer processed water bills. T J Swarzyk notes 44 hours of rerun time on the NCR system, with conversion costs borne by the city. Initial programs include utility billing voter registration accounts and budgets.
Gregor of rural Atkins died Monday after a brief illness at the Lutheran nursing home in Vinton. Born Jan 2, 1873, in Atkins, he was a Calvary Baptist church member. Surviving are two sons, Alexander Jr. and Randle, both of Atkins, with funeral services at Turner chapel west at 3 p.m. Wednesday conducted by Rev. Harry R. Egner. Burial in Fairfax cemetery. The Linn county grand jury met Monday to review 23 cases including a murder charge against Perry H. Harris for a February 14 Cedar Rapids shooting that killed Ernest Lee Jordan. Also considered are refiled indictments in the Edward F. Jacobsmeyer arson case and Raul R. Gutierrez rape case along with robbery and rape charges against several others.
Linn county deputies investigated the death of Rosemary Jenkins a 30 year old Center Point resident and her full term newborn found in a living room trash can. Sheriff officials said the infant was born alive and an autopsy was ordered with the mother dying from hemorrhaging. William Jenkins reported discovering his wife at about 8 p.m. Saturday after returning home from work.
