Historic Luther Brewer house moves to new Cedar Rapids site
Cedar Rapids couple Greg Young and Dawn Stephens moved the 117 year old Luther Brewer home from Mercy Medical Center to Oak Hill Jackson neighborhood. Built in 1897 and listed on the National Register, the house will be restored with aims for habitable spaces by June aided by anticipated tax credits. Mercy sold the property for $1 with move required and donated demolition costs.

Luther Brewer, longtime Cedar Rapids publisher of the Cedar Rapids Republican and Torch Press president, helped found the city’s first public library. He died in 1933. His NRHP-listed home, built in 1897 and once a four-plex, sits among nearby mansions razed in the 1970s for medical offices. Taft visited the home in its early days.

Abduction Attempts Reported in Two Iowa Cities
In Linn and Jones counties two men tried to lure young girls into a car. In Mount Vernon a white sedan with a tattooed white male driver approached two girls offering candy. in Olin a similar suspect attempted to lure a 12 year old walking home from school. No injuries reported.
