In Des Moines the Republican led Iowa senate voted to exempt religious goods from sales tax. The move followed a heated debate with Sen Tom Dailey withdrawing his name from the bill and Sen Duane Dewel pushing the motion to end debate. All but one Democrat opposed the final action as the party line held.
President Eisenhower will address the National Education Association centennial dinner on the school construction program. The speech airs live on ABC at 9:05 p.m. CST and via transcription on CBS 9:05, NBC 9:15, and MBS 9:30. Telecast is not planned.

Anna Becicka 86 of 109 Twelfth Street SE Cedar Rapids widow of Charles Becicka died at home after a short illness. Born near Mt Vernon April 11 1870 she moved from Becker Minnesota 17 years ago. Thomas M. Hogan two year old son of Mr and Mrs Walter Hogan of 2026 Grande avenue SE Cedar Rapids died after a long illness. He is survived by his parents a brother John and six sisters Jane Barbara Mary Susan and Elaine all of Cedar Rapids and Jeanette of Dubuque. Cedar Rapids city council approved plans for a granite Ten Commandments monument to be funded by Eagles youth programs. The 32 inch by 4 1/2 foot tablet, weighing 1,600 pounds, will stand in the Plaza facing Third Avenue with maintenance funded by a yearly gift of 50 dollars per year. A formal dedication is planned for Sunday June 9.
Major Hans Hornbostel 76 died of a heart ailment in New York. A former army engineer and Bataan survivor, he spent years campaigning against leprosy stigma. He entered a Louisiana leprosarium to be with his wife Gertrude, later lived in North Bellmore, Long Island, after her cure.
Iowa City consulting engineer Ned L. Ashton won a contract to study aluminum use for a bridge spanning Clive road across interstates 6 and 69 northwest of Des Moines. He will be paid $500 monthly up to a maximum of $7,500 by the State Highway Commission.

Walter Garrett Van Nostrand 53 of Iowa City, a State Board of Social Welfare employee, was free on 750 bond in Knoxville on a drunk driving charge. Arrested after midnight Monday, he was bound over to the Marion county grand jury with a May 7 hearing. He works as a property counselor checking property of old age assistance recipients against pension liens.
Des Moines AP Tama Indian council asks Iowa legislature to appropriate 2500 dollars yearly to hire an additional law enforcement officer on the Tama settlement. County attorney Walter Willett warns of rising intoxication, wild parties, and child abuse, urging state help. Loveless forwards the request to lawmakers.
Frances Jean Waterman, 26, charged with murdering her two young daughters, was moved from jail to Independence Mental Institute after a Wednesday night order by District Judge George Heath pending arraignment. Police say she slashed the throats of Frances Jean, 2, and Sheryll, 9 months, as they slept. she also tried to kill herself and her husband, Harry, 30. Funeral services for the girls were held Thursday afternoon.
Sioux City report notes Lila Cloud, 32, who escaped Czechoslovakia in 1953 with seven others in a homemade tank, will take the U S citizenship oath April 12 before Federal Judge Henry Graven. She expects a family celebration and says it will feel good to become an American. Leonard Cloud, whom she met in 1945 in Czechoslovakia, is mentioned.
Des Moines and 44 Iowa cities will be linked by automatic long distance switching starting June 16. Marvin Oberg, vice president and general manager of Northwestern Bell, calls the system the largest single project in Iowa telephone history. Callers will dial a local operator who connects them to the distant party, paving the way for direct long distance dialing in the next step.

Gen Curtis LeMay, head of the Strategic Air Command, was named vice chief of staff of the Air Force effective July 1. The move follows a broader reshuffle with Gen Lyman Lemnitzer becoming vice chief of staff of the Army. LeMay, 50, has led America's nuclear bomber fleet for nine years and will replace Gen Thomas White as Air Force chief of staff on June 30.
A new storm threatens western Iowa with three to six inches of snow and showers in the southeast. Des Moines reports strong winds up to 50 mph overnight with heavy rain in eastern Iowa. Highways become snow packed north of a line through Onawa to Elkader. warmer conditions expected toward the weekend.
High winds and fallen branches damaged electric lines in the Cedar Rapids area. Four towns Mechanicsville Stanwood Clarence and North English experienced outages while Cedar Rapids Marion and downtown lights were affected by tangled lines and blown poles. Crews worked overnight into Thursday to repair the damage following a Thursday rainstorm.
Bern reports Henry J. Taylor writer and radio commentator is set to become U S ambassador to Switzerland. Swiss officials said they notified Washington he is acceptable and will succeed Frances Willis who has served since 1953. Taylor, 54, a Republican, is also known for economic commentary and writing.

He is a member of Cedar Rapids Country club and Pickwick club and chairs Linn county Cancer Crusade.
A petition for R-3 two family zoning at 283 Wilson avenue SE was filed with the city council Thursday along with an objection to the shift. David and Edna Thompson asked that the present R-2 zoning be changed so another house can be built on a 60 by 182 foot lot to rent the existing house. Attorney B D Silliman said Cedar RapidsAdjustment Board denied in 1956 what the Thompsons propose and noted that even in a two family zone there cannot be two dwellings on one lot. Council referred both communications to the City Plan Commission for further consideration, along with a six name Thompson neighbors petition not to object.
A devastating blast at a powder warehouse in suburban Villa Gramado, Rio de Janeiro, on Wednesday killed four people and injured about 500 others, authorities said as rescue operations continued through the day.
