Alaska Highway Transfer to Canada in Whitehorse Ceremony
The United States formally handed over the Alaska Highway to Canada at Whitehorse Yukon Territory ceremonies. Brig. Gen. William M. Hoge represented the U S in the absence of Fiorello LaGuardia as Canada received the highway along with airports and telephone service. The project, begun in 1942 and completed in 1943, cost about 80 000 per mile with estimates around 130 million dollars, and involved American troops who built the highway and later marked the transfer with a truck and equipment salute.
