The Iowa Supreme Court on Tuesday suspended six month jail terms for three CIO officials James Carey William Sentner and Hollis Hall in the Maytag Newton strike case. It ordered fines of 500 each or five months more if not paid. The court denied their petitions for review but kept the contempt rulings intact.

One Man Injured In Collision Near Vinton
A head on collision four miles west of Vinton between a truck driven by James Bergen 21 of Vinton and a passenger car driven by Joe Shirley 28 of near Vinton caused Shivley to suffer head lacerations and several broken ribs. Shirley was taken to a Vinton hospital while Bergen was uninjured. State Patrol said both vehicles hugged the center of the gravel road at the crest of a hill. Shirley worked at the Ed Hansen farm and Bergen drives for Members Mutual Oil.

William Peek 82 died at his Long Beach California home Monday. His daughter Mrs H B Arnold of Oelwein rushed to his side. Peek was a well known Oelwein citizen, served three terms as mayor, led civic affairs, and was Fayette county recorder in West Union for years. He formerly operated the Union house and is survived by his wife.

Des Moines high school senior Charles S. Whetstone won the Iowa State Safety Council contest with an essay arguing driver, pedestrian, and cyclist carelessness causes most highway crashes. He proposes mandatory safety courses in schools and offers a choice of a trip to the New York World's Fair or a $350 college scholarship as prize. Second and third prizes went to Helen Lyons and Eleanor Dykhouse for essays on safety. Elderly Vinton Farmer Burns In Grass Fire
James H. Burkhart a 79 year old pioneer farmer of the Vinton community suffered burns to his hands feet and legs when his clothing ignited while burning dry grass on his farm three miles northeast of Vinton.
