Citizens urged to enforce city rules banning dogs in parks except on leash or at a designated dog area on Edgewood Road NW. Police will prosecute violators. leash limits, fenced areas, and cleanup rules apply to protect parks.
Two men held in Linn County Jail on drug charges after police found marijuana plants scales and pills in Carey E. Hamilton and Jeffrey S. Read's apartment. Police were responding to gunshot reports when they learned the men had been firing fireworks. Hamilton faces additional fifth degree theft for a Cedar Rapids street sign found in his room.
Browning 46 of 1052 Fifth Ave SE pleads guilty in Linn District Court to second degree murder for the Jan 13 shotgun slaying of T J Mayfield. Sentencing set for April 24 at 3 pm. He remains jailed awaiting sentencing. Mayfield’s body was found at 815 Fifth Ave SE. Browning had earlier pleaded guilty to a separate assault charge in 1980.
David L. Walton twenty of 521 Seventh Ave SE Linn County was sentenced to two concurrent ten year terms. One term stems from a second degree burglary in an apartment break in during which Tubbs shot him as he fled. The other term is for a September 14 1979 false use of a financial instrument. Peters 26 of 521 Seventh Ave SE was charged but his charges were dismissed March 4 after cooperation in Walton case. Tubbs pleaded guilty to assault with intent to inflict serious injury and got two years probation. Walton was hospitalized after the shooting.
Thomas Collins Sr. says funding for a downtown Cedar Rapids mall remains positive as a group explores industrial revenue bonds. A 12-person meeting discussed legality and timing with Abbott Lipsky Robert Armstrong Al Peremsky and Peter Bezanson. They expect a full financial plan in three weeks and aim to seek council approval for about 9.5 million in bonds to fund the three story Second Street mall project with no ground floor due to utility costs.
Harry E. Willett, 59, collapsed at the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Overland Park and died this afternoon from an apparent heart attack. He was transported by air ambulance to Mercy Trauma Center. Initial radiation contamination reports were denied by Mercy officials. Willett was a Bechtel Corp. subcontractor employee in the reactor building.
Seven people were arrested and charged with drunk driving in Linn County overnight. Thomas E. Clark 37 of 201 Sunset Lane Hiawatha was also cited for speeding. Carrie C. Clinton 22 of 1125 Cheyenne Road NW Robin A. Hupton 30 of 636 16th Ave SW Paul D. Reynolds 20 of 120 Second St SW Gary D. Oakley 35 of 3600 Oakland Road NE Richard A. Capp 32 of 1715 Washington Ave SE and David G. Wilkin 43 of 1230 27th St SE were all detained.
