Berrigan Convicted For Smuggling Letter From Prison

Harrisburg report says jurors in the Harrisburg Seven case asked Judge R Dixon Herman to reread legal instructions and allow more testimony from the government’s key witness. Philip Berrigan was found guilty of smuggling a letter from a federal prison around May 24, 1970, without the warden’s knowledge or consent, while nine other counts remained deadlocked. The defense called the verdict discriminatory and vowed to seek a reversal, noting this could be the first such prosecution of its kind. The judge planned to continue deliberations if the jury stayed hopeful, or dismiss them if they became hopelessly deadlocked.
