Iowa forecast calls for fair cool conditions with a slight warm trend midweek. Normal highs and lows are noted with scattered showers possible Saturday and a near seasonal precipitation total by month’s end. Public notices report bills passed, divorces granted, and local obituaries from diverse towns.
George Iowa report details the drowning of 6-year-old Bernard Lienemann after he fell from a bridge while playing with other children. An all-night search failed to recover the body as crews in boats searched the Little Rock river downstream. Bernard was the son of Mrs. Eldora Lienemann. his father died in World War II.
The Iowa Senate completed action on a bill appropriating 9 585 771 dollars annually for Board of Control institutions and sent it to the governor. The measure totals 217 575 dollars above Beardsley’s recommendation and 931 536 dollars above the 1949 act, funding Independence state hospital Toledo juvenile home and other facilities.
News from Manila reports that twenty of the 27 Huk members who killed Mr and Mrs John Hardie of Condon Oregon and their Australian farm manager March 20 have been slain. One deceased Huk is named Ben Domingo about 29 head of the Huk regional command.
The courthouse released the April term docket listing criminal and equity cases by date. Notable names include Wall, Williams, Duffy, Sheronick, Sueppel, Behrends, Fifield, Davidson, Murphy, Murillo, and others, with numerous civil actions set from April 3 through May 7 and into May 21.
Three men pled guilty to criminal charges and received suspended sentences from Judge Floyd Philbrick in Linn County. Clyde Perrigo 40 of 1711 E avenue NE. Wilbur Linzy 28 of Waterloo. Ray Frasher 38 of 830 B avenue NE faced varied offenses including carrying a concealed weapon false pretenses and desertion of a minor. Perrigo received three months for carrying a knife. Linzy 30 days then 10 unserved days suspended. Frasher six months suspended with a condition to support his wife and child.
Yancy D. Hardy, 32, of Tyler Texas, was moved from Linn county jail to Leavenworth Kansas to begin a 20 year federal sentence for the November bank robbery of Laurens state bank. Co defendant Kenneth A. Kitts, who escaped Linn county jail January 22, was sentenced to 30 years and is serving 12 in Nebraska as a habitual criminal. he will start the federal term after that. Hardy waited at Linn county jail after sentencing for removal.
Miles Sutera, 38, of Robins, becomes Linn County's Second District supervisor after resigning from the county board of education to avoid dual office. He took part in an afternoon session Tuesday. The education board will appoint his successor at a Roosevelt hotel meeting possibly Friday night to serve until the next election.
The sheriff's office investigates the theft of four cartons of cigarettes from the courthouse coffee bar basement Monday night. Maude Lundstrom of 900 Center Point Read NE runs the snack bar. only four cartons are missing though others remain in a locked cabinet. No break in details available.
E J Weis Jr sues Goodrich Shackelford Inc for 3972.73 claiming damages and loss of use of a semi trailer after a Dec 22 1950 crash on Highway 63 near New Hampton caused by Chester Chel sing. The Weiss truck was driven by Arthur Warneke. Separately Exchange State Bank seeks 81.77 plus 7 percent interest from March 27 1951 in a promissory note suit against James Begley.
A wage and hour conference between city councilmen and AFL spokesmen is scheduled for Wednesday after a two hour CIO AFL meeting left most differences resolved. A 150 AFL workers threat of a Friday walkout remains, with demands for a 40 hour week and 13 cents raise plus $25 monthly for police and fire. Council favors 44 hour week and offers future concessions tied to budget.
Mrs. L. V. Fairley aged 67 of Mechanicsville suffered a cut forehead and back injury in a two vehicle collision at Fifth avenue SE and Sixth street SE. She was taken to St. Luke's hospital. Grandson Russell Rhoads aided as he drove east on Fifth avenue SE. Grace Andrews 31 of Marion was cited for failure to keep her car under control after officers investigated.
Defense lawyers gave final arguments in the first degree murder trial of George Archer 37 a transient accused of beating an elderly widow to death Mrs Lillian Chapman 72 slain last May 30 The prosecution summarized its case after presenting a rebuttal witness Clifford Showers who testified the waitress Lucille Sterner was not working on May 30 and could not corroborate Archer's alibi

Karl Stammeyer 70 of St. Lucas died in a Tuesday morning blaze that gutted the Victor Kuennen hardware store. Stammeyer, an employee, reentered the building to save stock and was overcome by smoke. Melvin Kuennen suffered burns. volunteers aided despite snowdrifts and mud delaying response. Stammeyer survived by his wife and three sons. funeral plans pending.
Mrs Anna Macha 66 of 1313 Second street SE Cedar Rapids died Tuesday morning after a lingering illness. Born in Czechoslovakia April 7 1884 she came to Iowa City at age three. Survived by daughter Mrs Chauncey Zavodsky Cedar Rapids two sons Leo and William Cedar Rapids a brother William Souchek San Diego and six grandchildren. Services in Polansky chapel at a time to be announced.
Jill Lynne Furler, 0 daughter of Mr and Mrs Ralph Furler of Palo, died after a brief illness in an Iowa City hospital at 3 30 p m Monday. Born Cedar Rapids January 30 1951 she leaves a brother Jan two grandpar ents Lena Furler Cedar Rapids and Francis See Ely and great grandmother Mary See near Ely. Services 2 p m Thursday Brush chapel conducted by Rev Ralph Liemeyer Tipton. Friends may call Wednesday.

Iowa City reports Sgt. Vernon Eggenburg age 23 killed in action in Korea on March 9 after serving in two wars. He was wounded in WWII and twice in Korea, and served in the Second Army division. He was the second Iowa Citian killed in Korea. first was Capt. Lawrence E. Paul in a January plane crash.
Des Moines AP reports the Iowa Senate blocked a house bill aimed at forcing district judges to rule within 90 days. The judiciary committee recommended indefinite postponement, allowing the bill to die in the Senate. The House had approved a 90 day decision deadline with possible extensions by agreement.
President Truman urged Americans to abandon selfishness as the nation faces Communist threats. Speaking at the cornerstone ceremony of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, he linked sacrifice abroad in Korea to duties at home, urging citizens to forgo personal gain and personal comfort for the defense effort.
Linn County draft office staff study new general information bulletins on selective service testing for college students. Exams to determine draft eligibility and continuation of study will occur May 26 June 16 and June 30 at colleges nationwide. Local boards issue admission tickets and set test dates. Washington AP reports a 11 day wait for college men applying for the new draft aptitude test deferment. The Selective Service System said draft boards will not have application cards until April 12 as local boards nationwide face a flood of requests. The agency advised students to apply immediately, but only once cards are distributed to boards in April.
Vernon Mevis, 21, a factory worker, confessed to setting a series of blazes that prompted near-martial law in Greenville. One church destroyed, another church and two downtown buildings damaged. Loss estimated at $300,000 with no injuries.
