Three Flyers Die in Futile Bid to Save Injured Pal
At Fifteenth Air Force base in Italy three American flyers gave their lives attempting to rescue an injured crewmate during a crash landing of a Liberator bomber. Pilot James A. Krispinsky and co-pilot Craige Andrus died, engineer Wade E. Saunders perished, and navigator Raymond P. Pullman Fowler was killed while aiding the injured crewman. Benjamin L. Smalley Jr. survived with minor injuries.
