Santa Monica AP reports Leo J. Colapietro 34 bailed out of a DC Skyray F-4D at 650 mph after a cockpit canopy ripped off during a test over the ocean. He dislocated his shoulder and fractured his pelvis and two vertebrae but landed in the water, inflated his life vest, and was rescued after 45 minutes. He remained hospitalized for about a month.
Jakarta forces backed by fighter planes and amphibious troops rout rebels from two ports in central Celebes. Lt. Col. Rudy Pirngadi says rebels still fight as the seizure could allow cutoffs from rebel areas in north Celebes. This marks the first action on Celebes since February.
Linn County Cancer Society reports 20 percent progress toward a 34300 goal with $6966 raised. General Chairman B Philip Bowen says the response is gratifying. Residential chairs named for west and east sides. Kickoff meetings set for next Wednesday April 9 at 10 am 2 pm and 7 30 pm. participants invited.
In Des Moines, 800 Iowa Power and Light Company workers strike across 24 counties while the company reports most service interruptions ended. Harry R. Pearson, ops manager, said aside from the Oskaloosa area all service was good.
Gov. Herschel Loveless canceled a speech in Cedar Rapids after a strike by central Iowa electrical workers. Mayor Jim Meaghan filled in, giving an informal talk on city hall operations to Collins Radio technicians at the Eagles hall.
About 450 customers south and west of Oskaloosa lost power after a pole burned during the Tuesday storm. Electrical Workers Union members stopped work for a third day Wednesday amid a grievance dispute over 32 Ipaleo truck drivers docked an hour’s pay for refusing to pass through a city testing station. Governor Loveless met with union reps and urged rapid restoration, with service partly back by late Tuesday and officials saying union crews would handle outages in emergencies when possible.
The Cedar Rapids Tornado Warning System was reorganized Tuesday night after the first season tornado in northwest Iowa. About 35 officials from Cedar Rapids Des Moines Marion Hiawatha and other East Iowa towns met to plan procedures to protect lives and property. Experts from Des Moines weather bureau telephone companies and volunteer tornado spotters joined Cedar Rapids civil defense to map a battle plan. Attendees included KCRG News Director John K Williams and many local officials and engineers from area utilities and agencies.
Courthouse voting machines will again be used in Cedar Rapids high schools for the annual Boys State elections this month. The Linn county board of supervisors approved use of county booths as requested by Hanford post of the American Legion, sponsor of the project. N E Lillies, the post's Boys State committee chairman, forwarded the request to the board. The election for senior high students will be held April 22 in Jefferson, Washington, St Wenceslaus, St Patrick and Immaculate Conception schools.
Maurice W. June, 41, of 523 Sixth Ave SE, and James W. Tiernan Jr., 41, of 4202 Mt. Vernon Rd SE, pled guilty to bad check charges and had sentences suspended or reduced in Franklin County Court. June, accused of passing a forged $10 supermarket check, was paroled from a 10-year term by Judge Charles Penningroth. Tiernan, father of seven, had a seven-year sentence suspended by Judge Floyd Philbrick after admitting cashing a worthless $20 supermarket check and other bad checks March 26.
In Linn district court two men pled innocent to criminal charges. Frank L. Watson, 42, of 1012 First St. SW, faced a sodomy accusation involving a minor. Marion Rife, 23, of Des Moines pled innocent to embezzlement of mortgaged property after disposing of a clock radio and radio phonograph bought via a conditional bill of sale from Spahn's Home Specialty store.
Defendants were submitting evidence on the eighth day of a $40,000 civil jury trial. Plaintiffs rested Tuesday as the trial began last Monday. Owners of the Union building seek to recover from two insurance companies for alleged damages to the wall between the Union building and Loop Storage garage.
John s Church seeks 236 63 dollars in auto damages from a cow owned by Henry Lindley after a collision near Central City on June 13 1956. Kenneth Lindley named as co defendant. farm owner alleged negligent letting the cow roam. Earlier suit had named only Kenneth Lindley.
Lumber Supply, Inc. filed two suits Tuesday. One seeks $1,234.68 and foreclosure of a mechanic's lien against Lyle and Gwendoline Ford. The other requests $285.19 due on account from Robert and Charles Conway, Conway Brothers Wrecking Company.
A suit by Bert Stoneburg of Sioux City to collect 492.50 in commission from Gine Mercuria was dismissed Tuesday. Stoneburg had alleged payment due on a real estate transaction but the case was dismissed by the plaintiff.
London AP report states Arthur Whitehead a self made millionaire nicknamed the king of the shilling shares was charged with fraud. Scotland Yard led an inquiry involving four others as London’s financial district faced the case.
Andrew Al Steen 54 a Cedar Rapids resident and Iowa Tax Commission sales tax field auditor has filed as a Democrat candidate for Linn County auditor in the June 2 primary. He is the first Democrat since 1944 to seek the post held by Republican Otto F. Hanzlik. Next Tuesday is the filing deadline. the primary may shape the sheriff race as three Democrats contend for the nomination to face Republican incumbent James H. Smith.
A tiff between a committee member and Russell Lundy of the highway commission centers on a 4 mile Kamrar project. Walker plans next session to make the commission a full-time body. County boards of supervisors may have final say on which roads are improved, per legal counsel.
The Iowa Highway Commission on Wednesday authorized a study of speed zones on the primary road system to judge if they are appropriate. Carl Schach will conduct the study in light of a new point system from the State Department of Public Safety. The commission noted some limits seem unrealistically low and said it cannot regulate town limits but can suggest higher speeds on improved roads.
AP report from Logan Idaho says two Colorado residents Herman Schoorman aged 49 and Ronald Lee Schoorman aged 17 from Brighton were killed in a noon collision on Route 30 on the south edge of Logan. A truck driver, Richard Davis Felton, of a Colorado firm, survived without injury. The relation between the victims was not immediately clear.
Barbara Ann Nemmers 74 of 1701 Grande Ave SE Cedar Rapids died Wednesday after a lingering illness. Born May 27 1883 in Wisconsin she lived in Cedar Rapids 35 years and was a member of the Sanctuary Society of Immaculate Conception church. Survived by husband Peter J Nemmers daughter Mrs John Kehrer two sons Quentin and Bernard and two sisters Sister Mary Sixtus and Mrs Josephine Bentall. Services at Monahan funeral home 10 am Saturday with burial at Mt Calvary. Rosary to be recited Thursday and Friday. flowers omitted per family request.

Charles Leon Ehda 80 a former Linn county resident died Tuesday in a Pomona California hospital after a lingering illness. Surviving are his wife one brother and one sister and four children Raymond and Carl E of Rapids are among them.
Special to The Gazette Iowa City March meeting drew 275 attendees as 115 married students reaffirmed resistance to a $10 month rent hike for university housing while administration pressed the rate rise to fund Hawkeye Village. Officials cited subsidies to cover unit costs, and warned of possible eviction for those who refuse to sign new leases. Richard Clark led the protesters and said another meeting was planned for April 25.
Mrs. Harriett Ann Johnson 82 widow of Robert J. Johnson of 1210 Eleventh St SE Cedar Rapids died Tuesday. Born in Keokuk August 12, 1875 she had lived in Cedar Rapids 31 years. Surviving is a daughter Mrs. Vergie Boyd of Cedar Rapids.
A service for Mrs Irene McPipe of Burlington is set for 1 p.m. Friday at Beatty Bearle's with the Rev. D O Bell of Waterloo officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill. Friends may visit the chapel after 2 p.m. Thursday.
Corsall, backing a selective system, urged the board to reinstate him after a conflict of interest arose from mayoral appointments to the school board. A rehiring vote failed, about 100 people shouted threats of legal action, and the board met in a 90 minute closed session before a victorious crowd. Corsall earns 5500 as a teacher and 5050 as mayor, pledging to donate the mayoral salary to a teen recreation center.
